The Anticancer Lifestyle-summarized from an article by David Servan-Schreiber, M.D. (in the March/April 2009 AARP Magazine, p20) Dr. Servan-Schreiber opines that about 15% of the cause of cancer is genetic. He points out that we all carry cancer cells even if only a few come down with it. “More than 1/3 of Americans will develop detectable cancer. But nearly 2/3’s will not; their natural defenses will have kept the disease from taking hold.” He points out that we need to keep our defenses up and too many are not. He does recognize that aging is an important factor but cancer is rising at a rate of 1 to 1.5% from 1969 to 1999. He does point our that once you get cancer, proven treatments are the way to go. He summarizes current research that shows that cancer grows faster if three conditions are met: 1) Weak immune system 2) Presence of low grade infection 3) When tumors are allowed to grow new blood vessels Here are his recommendations for cancer fighting based in part on living 16 years with cancer: a) Avoid refined sugar in all its forms including sodas and ketchup. b) Add know cancer fighters to your meals. c) Walk briskly for 30 minutes, six times a week. d) Reduce stress. Use yoga, qigong, and/or meditation to reduce stress. Also do PMA (positive mental attitude) when you get up and maintain it all day. e)
