The Director's Column

Our New Meeting Place

Since there is some question as to what Wilson N. Jones Health Center will do with their Senior Center on Gallagher (where we have been meeting), we have decided to move away from a hospital setting.  After all we tend to associate the hospital with pain and unpleasant experiences.  Instead we are meeting in September at the new spa in town -- see below.  And we are using the Pat Nuckols meeting room, which is named after an old and good friend -- Tom's wife -- who died last year from cancer.  I think you will like the change and the new meeting room.

See you at the September meeting.  Jerry Bylander

Title: "What Do I Need to Know About the Latest and Greatest Treatments for Prostate Cancer, and How Can I Find Them?"
Speaker: Don Riedl, retired Proctor and Gamble manager and long time prostate cancer survivor

Program:  Don is just back from the “National Conference on Prostate Cancer 2005” held in Washington, D.C.  You will learn what the leading prostate cancer practitioners answer when they ask themselves, “Can all forms of prostate cancer be cured?”  Since it is important to know how to find help, Don will describe the talks given by leading practitioners and their relative availability.  You will also learn how to ask your own doctor about these new therapies.  You will also find out what an oncologist general practitioner is and how he can help you approach a cure for your own cancer if you should so choose, and how to use this advice with your own doctor to achieve a cure.  When and why should you choose such a specialist for your prostate cancer first, and what can they tell you about the latest treatments for all stages of prostate cancer (CaP)?  What are the particular stages of prostate cancer?

Proposed November meeting:

Title:
"What to Eat and Why for Future or Present Prostate Cancer Patients"
Speaker:
TBD

Program:
Can some diets prevent cancer?  Ameliorate it?  Our speaker will present the state of current thinking.  The accepted prostate cancer diet is the heart diet with soy added.  There are some questions about free radicals such as vitamin E or selenium, and how much dose is too much?

Henri has suggested that an interesting web site:  Here is a link to a German scientist who has a good test for systemic cancer, to keep from putting a man through therapies that have no chance of success:
